What is Jazz?

Jazz has two important ingredients that make it different from other kinds of music, although elements of jazz can often be heard in popular music. The first improvisation, in which one or more of the players make up the music as they go along. Jazz musician often use particular melodies or harmonies as a basis for their improvisations, but they aim to create a new piece of music every time they play.

The other important ingredient in jazz is a particular kind of driving rhythm, sometimes called ‘swing’. As they play, the musicians emphasize the beat of the music so that they constantly urge the music along, giving it tremendous energy.

Jazz musicians play solos on brass and wind instrument, such as trumpets, trombones and saxophones. They are accompanied by piano or guitar, a bass and drums, which make up the rhythm section – although any of these instruments may play solos. There are also jazz singers, who sing with groups. Jazz composers write music for group to play and create tunes that musicians use as a basis for improvisation. Some composers write more elaborate pieces, containing sections that allow improvisation. Musicians and composers aim to develop their own individual sound.
